The canon status of the new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie means that another major character can return. The original 1997 slasher movie, written by Scream‘s Kevin Williamson and based on the Lois Duncan young adult novel of the same name, became a massive hit, grossing $125.3 million against its $17 million budget. Because of this, it spawned a franchise that now includes 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, 2006’s I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, and 2021’s unrelated Prime Video series reboot of the same name.

The franchise is set to return with an I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel helmed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, which she co-wrote with Sam Lansky based on Leah McKendrick’s draft of a previous version. Original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are in talks to reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, who they portrayed in the first two movies. They would join a cast that also includes Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King.

I Know What You Did Last Summer Reboot’s Canon Status Means Brandy Can Return As Karla

The Iconic Singer’s Character Survived The Slasher Sequel

A recent update from Robinson on the I Know What You Did Last Summer canon status has revealed that the new movie is in continuity with both the original movie and its sequel. This means that singer-songwriter Brandy can reprise her role as Karla, Julie’s best friend and roommate who survives the killer’s Caribbean rampage in the 1998 movie. Just like Ray and Julie, she has not been seen or mentioned in the franchise since I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, as the only returning character in the third movie was the killer Ben Willis.

Ben Willis was portrayed by Don Shanks in

, replacing Muse Watson from the first two movies.

Karla is similarly not shown in the I Still Know epilogue which depicts Ben stalking Julie and Ray at home, meaning she is likely still alive and well in the franchise’s universe. A possible appearance in the new movie would also be in keeping with recent roles the star has taken that honor her 1990s pop culture contributions. This includes reprising her title role from 1997’s Cinderella in Disney+’s Descendants: The Rise of Red and making a cameo appearance in Ariana Grande’s music video for “The Boy is Mine,” which is named after Brandy’s iconic 1998 duet with Monica.

Another indication that Brandy may be willing to return in the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel is the fact that her acting roles have already brought her back to the horror genre in 2024. She is set to star opposite Andrew Burnap, Neal Huff, and Kathryn Hunter in the upcoming A24 horror movie The Front Room, which is set to premiere in theaters on September 6. Her willingness to explore new stories in the genre combined with her recent references to her 1990s work could result in the triumphant return of Karla.
