The Batman’s Ending Just Got A Lot Worse For Carmine Falcone – Yes, Even After His Death

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Penguin. The Batman included many characters from the Dark Knight’s comic book history, and after playing a major role in the film, Carmine Falcone’s ending has been made worse by HBO’s The Penguin. Director Matt Reeves has plans to build an engrossing universe off his DC film, with The Penguin series being the first spinoff from Robert Pattinson’s movie franchise, now dubbed The Batman Epic Crime Saga. The Batman‘s ending saw the shocking death of Carmine Falcone, who played a key role in the film. The character’s death is the driving force of The Penguin.

With the boss of Gotham City’s criminal underworld dead, many players view it as an opportunity to fill in the power vacuum left in Falcone’s wake. Chief among the scheming characters in The Penguin are Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb and Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone. More than just building on the power vacuum that emerged after Carmine’s death, The Penguin is all about his legacy. Oz spent several years working in Falcone’s organization, rising through the ranks but always wanting more. As his daughter, Sofia has a very complicated relationship with her father, but also wants to rise to the top.

Carmine Falcone’s Batman Death Explained

A Shocking Discovery Was Teased As He Died

Carmine Falcone had an interesting connection to the Waynes in The Batman. The villain was saved by Thomas Wayne after being shot. Falcone would later accept a request for help from Thomas when journalist Edward Elliot got hold of Martha Wayne’s medical history. Falcone killed the journalist instead of just scaring him like Thomas wanted, and that left a stain on the Waynes’ legacy. In The Batman, Paul Dano’s Riddler exposed that, with the movie also leaving it up in the air that Falcone likely ordered the Waynes’ death on the night Thomas said he would reveal what Falcone did.

The Batman – Part II’s story has yet to be revealed; however, The Penguin makes it seem like Robert Pattinson’s Batman has left Gotham City.

The Riddler wanted to expose the corruption in Gotham. Taking out Falcone was an important part of that plan. As Turturro’s character was being arrested, Falcone thought he would still be in control due to how many police officers, judges, and politicians he had in his pocket. However, the Riddler shoots him in the chest and kills him. As he dies, Falcone seems to realize that Bruce Wayne is Batman, as his expression changes slightly. As a child, Bruce looked down on Falcone as his father operated on him, and Carmine seemed to recognize him doing the same as Batman.

Carmine’s Daughter Claimed Another Name As Her Own

The Penguin makes The Batman‘s ending worse for Carmine Falcone. The HBO series continues exposing the character’s crimes and villainy, with his legacy being thrown away by his own daughter. In the DC show, Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone reveals to her father that she wondered if he had killed her mother. After that, Carmine sends her to Arkham, with the rest of the Falcone family turning against Sofia, which makes the innocent woman be blamed for her father’s murder spree — Carmine strangled several women — and stay in Arkham for a decade.

When she comes out of prison after her father’s death, Sofia finds a different way to get back at him. The Penguin pushes the character to her breaking point, with Sofia choosing to violently erase any trace of her father. She kills the rest of her family, effectively ending the Falcone rule on crime in Gotham. Adding to that, Sofia makes a deal with the Triads, something Carmine would never approve of. Finally, she takes on her mother’s maiden name, becoming known as Sofia Gigante, and starts a new “family” of her own that replaces the Falcones as their opposite.

Sofia’s Alliance With The Maronis Is A Further Insult To Her Father

Cristin Milioti’s DC Character Is Taking Back Control

As The Penguin goes on, it seems like Sofia Gigante is only finding new ways to stick it to her father for what he did to her. The Penguin‘s latest episode saw Sofia make a deal with Carmine’s biggest enemy, Salvatore Maroni, the leader of the other major crime family in Gotham. While their alliance is a practical endeavor, as Sofia wants to kill Oz Cobb for murdering her brother and betraying her, while Maroni wants to kill Oz for the deaths of his wife and son, it is also a way for Sofia to insult Carmine even more.

Not only is his entire family dead, his criminal empire destroyed, and his daughter has taken a new name, but his biggest rival is now directly involved with Sofia. The Penguin showed how much Carmine loved to gloat in Maroni’s face. After Salvatore Maroni was arrested, Carmine took his ring, a symbol of power, and proudly displayed it anywhere he went. Sofia, now working with Maroni after throwing her father’s legacy in the garbage, shows how The Penguin makes Carmine’s death even worse for the Falcone legacy, as The Batman‘s ending led to the downfall of the whole family.
