I’m Listening: Frasier’s Return To KACL Is Proof That The Reboot Needs To Drop His Harvard Professor Job & Bring Back The Talk Show
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Frasier season 2, episode 8, “Thank You, Dr. Crane.”It has become apparent that the Frasier revival should finally drop its Harvard storyline and bring back the radio call-in segment after Frasier’s emotional return to Seattle. Following the Frasier revival seaosn 1 finale, which firmly established his new life in Boston with Freddy and a new support system, the Paramount+ series decided to bring back some familiar faces from his past life in the Pacific Northwest. As part of the expansion of Roz’s role in the new show, she and Frasier take a trip back to Seattle to save KACL with a final The Dr. Frasier Crane Show broadcast.
After his stint in Chicago, Frasier doesn’t need to work. He has more than enough money to enjoy retirement at this point. That said, a factor in his decision to stay in Boston was to become an educator at his alma mater. New Frasier’s first 10 episodes regularly baked this into the character’s story, with several of his new friends in the Paramount+ project from the school. That said, Frasier’s return to Seattle, albeit briefly, is more than enough motivation to officially end his ridiculous bid for professorship, highlighting what he actually should do during his final act in Boston.
Frasier’s Reboot Hasn’t Done Enough With Him Teaching At Harvard
Being A Teacher At Harvard Doesn’t Really Serve Frasier’s Story
In Frasier season 1, the Paramount+ show at least attempted to center storylines around the character’s new life as a guest educator at Harvard. He went to work and taught class, including one where Niles and Daphne’s son, David, was a part of. Even then, however, it has always felt like becoming a teacher at Harvard wasn’t the right fit for Frasier, not to mention how unrealistic it was. Frasier season 2 seems to casually move away from the teaching storyline altogether, with the character not having any narrative that is centered around his supposed job.

The Frasier reboot season 2, episode 8 FINALLY reveals what happened to David Hyde Pierce’s Niles Crane, but makes his ongoing absence worse.
Interestingly, Frasier still hangs out on the campus and mingles with its staff. In its sophomore year, however, thus far, that’s about it. He isn’t beholden with his class schedule and doesn’t interact with his students. At this point, Frasier might as well just be visiting Harvard to spend time with Alan Cornwall and that would be more realistic than sticking with the idea that he is still an educator in the school.
Frasier’s Brief KACL Return Proves He Belongs On A Talk Show
Being On A Call-In Show Highlights Frasier’s Best Quality
Ideally, Frasier and Roz would have staged a proper The Dr. Frasier Crane Show on their return to Seattle. That said, just the brief moment when Kelsey Grammer sits down in his old booth chair and say, “This is Dr. Frasier Crane. I’m Listening” is more than enough reason to revive a call-in segment. Not only is it nostalgic, but it also brings out Frasier’s best quality, which is his advocacy to help other people deal with their issues. This is something lacking in the new show, with his character’s arc mostly focused on some frivolous dilemma.
There’s no denying that the Seattle episode highlights that it’s time to drop the Harvard professorship storyline in Frasier and replace it with a more familiar and better-suited one.
Granted that Carol Burnett being the final special The Dr. Frasier Crane show caller in Seattle is a good way to wrap up the iconic segment, but the Paramount+ series can bring it back in Boston. Now that Roz is no longer with KACL, she and Frasier can team up on the East Coast to provide mental health help for people, either via a podcast or even a Harvard-based radio show. There’s no denying that the Seattle episode highlights that it’s time to drop the Harvard professorship storyline in Frasier and replace it with a more familiar and better-suited one.
