I’m Concerned By How Similar Knull’s Story In Venom 3 Is To Kang’s In His Only MCU Movie Before Marvel Changed Direction
I’m worried about how similar Knull’s story in Venom: The Last Dance is to Kang’s in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Venom 3 is the final film in the Venom trilogy, but it still leaves room for the Sony Spider-Man Universe to expand. The film introduces Knull, the creator of the symbiotes, who has the power to destroy any world he encounters. He is a massive threat to humanity and could be an overarching villain for the Sony universe and the MCU. While Knull doesn’t do much in Venom 3, he could return to wreak havoc later.
Knull is an awesome villain with an excellent design and powerful abilities that make him an Avengers-level threat. I hope we see more of him, whether he returns in a Sony or MCU project. However, Sony hasn’t shared its plans for him yet, and he shares many concerning similarities with the MCU’s Kang the Conqueror. Kang didn’t work out in the MCU, and I’m worried that Knull could be on the same path if Sony doesn’t have an official plan for him yet.
Everything We Know About Sony’s Plans For Knull
Knull is still trapped in the prison created by the symbiotes
Sony tends to use one-and-done villains, like Carnage and Riot, who were swiftly defeated in their only film. However, Knull is expected to have repeated appearances, becoming the Thanos of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Sony’s plans are unclear, but Venom 3 teased how dangerous he could be to its universe and the Marvel multiverse. At Sony’s 2024 New York Comic Con panel, Venom 3 director Kelly Marcel said this was only Knull’s first appearance and it is only the beginning.
This is just the introduction to Knull. Obviously, he’s a massive character, so you could never do one and done with him, so this is just a taste of Knull, you will get to meet him and then what the future holds for him; who knows.
Marcel’s statement is fairly vague, and it’s hard to predict Sony’s plans for Knull based on Venom 3‘s ending, especially since he’s still stuck in his prison on Klyntar. The mid-credits scene features Knull threatening our world and forcing us to watch, but that’s not as intimidating, since Venom and Eddie stopped him from escaping. His current path reminds me of another Marvel villain who was set up as the next central villain until Marvel decided to go in a different direction.
I’m Concerned Knull Is On A Very Similar Path To The MCU’s Kang
Knull’s story gives Sony a chance to pivot away from him like the MCU did with Kang
Knull and Kang have several similarities in their stories. Knull is imprisoned on Klyntar after being betrayed by the symbiotes he created. Kang was trapped in the Quantum Realm by Hope Van Dyne, who turned on him after she learned about his mission to wipe out universes across the multiverse. Both characters could only be freed by a random MacGuffin. Knull needed a codex, a key formed when Venom revived Eddie, and Kang needed to shrink his multiversal engine core so he could use it to escape.

Venom: The Last Dance features a sizable roster of new symbiotes and their hosts, going beyond Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and Venom alone.
Despite intentions to make Kang and Knull central villains for each universe, both failed to escape in their films. Venom destroyed the codex by sacrificing himself and Kang was seemingly killed by Ant-Man. Marvel did have plans to use an army of Kangs against the Avengers, but they decided to pivot and Kang’s death in Ant-Man 3 gave the studio an out. Since Knull is still stuck on Klyntar, I’m concerned that Sony could go a similar route with The King in Black, especially if Venom 3 underperforms at the box office.
I Hope Sony Has Plans To Make Knull A Major Threat To The MCU
Knull could be a Thanos-level threat for the Avengers
Knull’s future in the Sony universe could be short-lived, but he could still be a major antagonist in the MCU. Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credits scene teased Venom’s MCU debut, hinting that Sony has plans for its characters to crossover with Marvel. The small sliver of Venom in the MCU could bond with Peter Parker, informing him about Knull and the threat he could bring to this universe.
Knull also already has many comic book ties to the established MCU canon. In addition to the symbiote, Knull also created the Necrosword, the God-killing weapon used by Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder. He also has a connection to the Celestials, as they banished him to the Void after he used the Necrosword to kill one of them. Knull is an Avengers-level threat, and I hope Sony has plans to deliver on his potential after Venom: The Last Dance.
