Summary

- The Tomorrowverse, though underrated, offered wonderful story adaptations for DC’s animated heroes.
- Wonder Woman’s dramatic sacrifice sets the stage for a new DCU era, which is set to bridge the animated and live-action worlds.
Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Part Three provides Wonder Woman a poignant ending in the franchise over a year after the tumultuous final DCEU appearance for the character. The Tomorrowverse came to an end four years after it began, with the Crisis On Infinite Earths story bringing the timeline to a close via a 2024 animated movie trilogy. While one of the more underrated series in DC’s catalog, the Tomorrowverse provided a lot of wonderful story adaptations for the animated corner of the superhero genre, and brought its biggest and best heroes to life.
The Tommorrowverse timeline coming to a close with such a major comic story adaptation allowed for many major moments in its final hours, ensuring its installments ended on a high. This opportunity was extended to the cast and characters as well, with a wide selection of key figures getting their moments of respective glory as the Tomorrowverse wound down – including giving Wonder Woman a better ending than her prior DCEU timeline finale.

Wonder Woman’s Crisis On Infinite Earths Ending Gives Her A Fittingly Heroic Farewell
Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Part Three provides Wonder Woman a suitably dramatic and touching conclusion to her story in the Tomorrowverse. Faced with the destruction of the multiverse and the countless lives within it, Wonder Woman agrees to sacrifice herself to the Miracle Machine previously introduced in Legion Of Super-Heroes, with the death of the immortal hero allowing the Prime universe to be born through the use of her life force.
While another young Diana Prince is shown in the ending sequence of the movie, she’s strongly suggested to be one born of the different universe’s Wonder Woman iterations melding together, especially as it’s explicitly stated that this Wonder Woman isn’t immortal like the prior hero. Either way, seeing the main Wonder Woman sacrifice herself for the greater good is a perfect way to show the character’s compassion and commitment to protecting others above all else.
Why Wonder Woman’s Last Appearance In The DCEU Was Controversial
Gal Gadot’s Appearance In The Flash Wasn’t Initially Thought To Be Her Last DCEU Appearance
Wonder Woman’s final DCEU appearance was divisive for a variety of reasons. Not only was Wonder Woman a side character in The Flash who got very little in the way of screentime or meaningful purpose in the plot, this cameo was reportedly almost cut from the movie, and for a period of time was believed to have been entirely removed in March 2023, making it a point of contention among audiences before the scene had even been released.
Wonder Woman 3 being canceled also made the scene more retrospectively a sore spot for those invested in the hero, as it appears the intention for some time was to complete Diana Prince’s movie trilogy. With the concept that DCEU’s Wonder Woman might continue into the DCU being discussed – and director Patty Jenkins remaining hopeful about the finale’s chances for a considerable period of time – the news that the third movie would not be going ahead in any form made the reveal that Wonder Woman’s final appearance was in The Flash a bitter pill for many compared to prior hopes.

Crisis On Infinite Earth’s Goodbye To Wonder Woman Helps Set The Stage For The DC Universe Effectively
Choosing to end the Tomorrowverse’s story with Wonder Woman’s death and rebirth of sorts is a poignant way to close this chapter of DC’s on-screen history prior to the start of the DC Universe. With the DCU set to incorporate the live-action and animated releases in its main movie & show slate all into the same universe, the animation finishing Diana’s story in this way helps tee up for this major new beginning, helping the new era start on as clean a slate as possible.
While where Wonder Woman’s DCU debut will take place is not currently known, the announcement that the new DC cinematic universe contains Paradise Lost – a Wonder Woman prequel set in her home of Themyscira – and Wonder Woman villain Circe in Creature Commandos, the franchise’s first release, certainly bodes well for the hero’s future. Though Wonder Woman’s cinematic history hasn’t always gone smoothly, the prior setup for the newest on-screen version of the character – including the Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Part Three ending – will no doubt assist in crafting a new version of the warrior for a new age.
