In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the original crew and the modern Ghostbusters team up to take down Garraka with an ancient accomplice by their side: the Firemaster. As the fifth installment in the Ghostbusters franchise, Frozen Empire has the difficult task of raising the stakes of the overall series. It certainly helps that members of the original Ghostbusters cast return, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson. However, it’s the introduction of a new ghost-busting organization that truly makes the film sparkle. Plus, it unlocks an entirely unexplored part of Ghostbusters’ paranormal world.
The core of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’s Firemasters storyline is Kumail Nanjiani’s character, Nadeem. While viewers see Phoebe struggling to maintain her Ghostbuster status, Nadeem is introduced as a secondary plot. At first, he appears to be an oblivious man with a very dangerous paranormal object. Later, he becomes more integral to the story. Although Nadeem lacks the ghost-busting expertise of the other Frozen Empire cast members, he brings something new and exciting to the movie: firepower.

The Firemasters Are Another Supernatural Defense Team
The Firemasters’ Role In Frozen Empire Explained
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, it’s revealed that Nadeem is a Firemaster. The Firemasters are an ancient organization of individuals whose job is to hunt and catch spirits. Although Nadeem comes from a long line of Firemasters, ending with his recently deceased grandmother, he has no knowledge of his supernatural lineage. However, he and the Ghostbusters are forced to uncover his secret and abilities as quickly as possible in order to take down Ghostbusters villain Garraka. Ultimately, it takes both the Ghostbusters and Nadeem’s Firemaster powers to defeat the villain.
Ultimately, through the Firemasters,
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
opens the door to an entire world of paranormal ghost hunting that existed way before the Ghostbusters.
What makes the Firemasters so interesting is that, in a sense, they’re just another form of the Ghostbusters. The very first Ghostbusters movie from 1984 establishes that the ghost-hunting team formed after Venkman, Stantz, and Spengler encountered a ghost at the New York Public Library. However, it makes sense that these ghosts existed long before 1984 — and before the original cast of Ghostbusters encountered them. Through the Firemasters, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire opens the door to an entire world of paranormal ghost hunting that existed way before the Ghostbusters.
The Firemasters’ History Before Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
The Firemasters’ Relationship With Garraka Goes Back Thousands Of Years
Although Nadeem is clueless about the Firemasters in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, audiences get quite a bit of background on the mythical warriors. It’s unclear when the Firemasters began their work, but their history goes back thousands of years. This is proven through their relationship with Garraka. Apparently, 4,000 years before the events of Frozen Empire, the Firemasters managed to break Garraka’s Death Chill and seal him in an orb. Garraka is just one of the evil spirits and demons the group tamed and kept locked away. Their work continues long after their encounter with the villain.
The Death Chill is one of Garraka’s powers which allows him to convert human fear into physical cold, leaving his victims covered in impenetrable ice.
In fact, the Firemasters’ story connects directly to Nadeem’s grandmother. In 1904, Garraka’s orb was almost broken during a meeting of the Manhattan Adventurers Society. Though Nadeem’s grandmother was unable to save the room full of men from being frozen over, she managed to recapture Garraka. From there, it seems she kept the villain in a secret room among her other defeated spirits. It can be assumed that Nadeem’s family aren’t the only ones who make up the Firemasters. It’s also implied that thousands more ghosts are being held captive by Firemasters around the world.
The Firemasters’ Fire Powers Explained
What Nadeem Was Capable Of In Frozen Empire
Nadeem’s Firemaster powers are among the most magical elements of all the Ghostbusters movies. Rather than using science to take down ghosts, he has a particular set of skills that helps him tame spirits from beyond. One of the most pivotal abilities of Nadeem and the Firemasters is pyrokinesis. Nadeem can create flames between his fingertips and make them do his bidding. With the help of Melody, Nadeem uses his powers to maim and overwhelm Garraka. It’s unclear whether fire has always been a weakness of ghosts or if the Firemasters’ flames are particularly effective.
Nadeem enjoys a few other benefits of being a Firemaster, including a suit of brass he inherits from his grandmother. The Firemasters believe that brass is an alloy with magical properties that help repel ghosts. When Phoebe utilizes the metal for the Ghostbusters’ equipment, it works perfectly. Furthermore, it’s revealed that Firemasters have longer lifespans than the average person. Nadeem’s grandmother lived way past 100 years, which means Nadeem will likely do the same. Frozen Empire is only able to scratch the surface of what Firemasters might be capable of. Perhaps Ghostbusters 6 can reveal more about them.
The Firemasters’ Future After Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Explained
The Firemasters Will Likely Continue Beyond Nadeem
After successfully taking down Garraka at the end of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, it seems likely Nadeem will continue the Firemasters’ tradition. He could improve his own Firemaster skills, and if he ends up having children, it would make sense for him to pass down the legacy of the group, just as his grandmother did to him. Plus, after working together in Frozen Empire, the Ghostbusters and the Firemasters may now have a solid alliance that could continue into future Ghostbusters movies. Perhaps we’ll even see Nadeem again in another sequel.

It would definitely be interesting to see just how many Firemasters there are and what they’re capable of. Nadeem makes for a unique and fun character in Frozen Empire, but his lack of knowledge only takes him so far. Ghostbusters would likely benefit from expanding on the Firemasters by introducing a skilled and knowledgeable member of the ancient group. This would allow the Ghostbusters to learn more about spirits, and audiences could get a better sense of the other paranormal groups in this universe.
Overall, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire creates a very interesting story with Nadeem and the Firemasters. While the nostalgia and humor of Ghostbusters has almost always led to successful movies, this foray into new supernatural territory feels like a strong move for the franchise’s future. It allows the franchise to move in new directions and keep its storytelling fresh. With so many movies already under its belt, it’s pivotal for the Ghostbusters franchise to keep audiences intrigued. Ultimately, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘s introduction of the Firemasters accomplishes this.
