Wicked expands the story of The Wizard of Oz, and after seeing Dorothy briefly in the film, here’s what’s known about if the Kansas native is in Wicked: Part Two. The two-part movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical focuses on Elphaba (Cythnia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) instead of The Wizard of Oz‘s original main character, Dorothy Gale. By putting the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch at the center, the young girl previously played by Judy Garland in the 1939 movie is only seen briefly ahead of Wicked 2.

The story of Wicked 2 will keep Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship at the center, but there is more crossover with The Wizard of Oz in the sequel. Whereas Wicked is split into two movies with part one preceding Dorothy’s arrival in Oz, she is very much around as the conflict Elphaba and Glinda are tied to continues to rise. This includes her role in Elphaba’s ultimate fate and Wicked 2‘s conclusion. Looking at The Wizard of Oz and the Broadway version of Wicked, it would seem as though Dorothy will be in Wicked 2, and here’s what’s confirmed.

Wicked Sets Up A Potential Dorothy Appearance In The Sequel

Officially, there is no confirmation that Dorothy is in Wicked 2. She is not announced to play a role in the sequel movie, but this does not rule out the chances of her appearing completely. Based on the musical, Dorothy should not have been in Wicked, but she does have a brief cameo in the opening sequence leading into “No One Mourns The Wicked.” Since that moment takes place during what should be Wicked 2‘s ending, there is some setup for Dorothy to appear in the sequel then.

As it stands, most of Wicked‘s cast members are all confirmed to return for the sequel. Elphaba and Glinda will remain the main characters, while Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum), and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) will also play major roles. Boq (Ethan Slater), Nessarose (Marissa Bode), and Doctor Dillamond (Peter Dinklage) should also play prominent parts in the sequel. If Dorothy is in Wicked 2, she’ll fit in around the existing main storylines.

An Actress Has Yet To Be Officially Confirmed

Ahead of Dorothy’s possible appearance in Wicked 2, an actress has yet to be confirmed to play her in either part of the musical adaptation. No actress is credited as playing Dorothy in Wicked‘s credits despite her being seen for a single moment and other shots of her being included in the film’s marketing. This could mean that the single shot of her walking on the yellow brick road with the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow, Toto, and Tin Man was all done using CGI. The film also could have used an unknown or extra to play Dorothy for a few shots.

The fact that Wicked did not publicly cast an actress to play Dorothy lines up with the musical. She is not a major part of the stage production’s story, as she’s only featured as a silhouette when the Wicked Witch of the West is hit with water. Wicked might not have needed an actress to play Dorothy, but someone could have still been cast in the role once production shifted to making Wicked 2. If that is the case, Wicked‘s sequel can confirm what actress plays Dorothy and if she was part of the first film.

Dorothy’s role in the Wicked musical is directly tied to The Wizard of Oz‘s ending and the pale of water she hits the Wicked Witch of the West with. Considering how close to the Broadway production and original novel the first movie stays, the sequel should also closely align with its source material. That should mean a minor role for Dorothy in Wicked 2 as the movie reaches its conclusion of Elphaba and Glinda’s story. This would line up with the musical, although the movie adaptation could elevate her role slightly and show her beyond a silhouette.

Audiences should still not expect Dorothy to be a main character

It’s possible that Universal has already shown pieces of Dorothy’s role in Wicked 2. There were a few shots of Dorothy and her friends meeting The Wizard in Wicked‘s trailers that were not included in the final cut of the movie. Those scenes could be from Wicked 2 and indicate how the Kansas farm girl will factor into the sequel. If that is the case, then Wicked: Part Two stands to include a significantly bigger role for Dorothy than the first film. Audiences should still not expect Dorothy to be a main character, though.
