“You Basically Get To Be Darth Vader In A New Hope”: Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’s Opening Scene Teased By Jude Law
It sounds as though there’ll be a thrilling A New Hope reference when Jude Law makes his debut in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The next Star Wars TV show, Skeleton Crew, promises to be something unique; it’s the story of a group of kids from an (apparently) Earth-like planet who find themselves plunged into the Star Wars galaxy. It stares a group of child actors – and Jude Law as a mysterious character who’s officially called Jod Na Nawood, but who seems to hide a lot of secrets.
Jake’s Takes has released a new interview with Law, discussing the first few episodes of Skeleton Crew. “You basically get to be Darth Vader in a new hope,” Jake Hamilton teased when discussing the show’s opening scenes. Law agreed, noting that the show gets to “re-create the mood of famous moments.” It’s a tantalizing hint, and it raises even more questions about Law’s character – suggesting Hamilton considers him a villain, not a Jedi.
What Skeleton Crew’s Homages Mean For Star Wars
Is Jude Law a hero or a villain?
Precious little is known of Jod Na-Nawood right now; the first trailers suggested the kids think he’s a Jedi, but recent theories have suggested Jude Law is playing a secret Sith. This comment is sure to add weight to that theory, because it suggests Skeleton Crew opens with Jod Na Nawood launching an attack and interrogation. Law has history playing villains in established franchises, so he’d be perfect for that kind of role.
What makes this particularly interesting, though, is that Law’s comment suggests Skeleton Crew is very carefully put together. It’s seemed deliberately aimed at younger viewers, feeling like the perfect Christmas fare, but it also clearly plays the nostalgia card hard. That’s a smart approach, hopefully meaning the established Star Wars fandom will also be hooked.
Our Take On Skeleton Crew’s Homages
This is feeling like Star Wars’ answer to Stranger Things
Skeleton Crew increasingly feels like Star Wars‘ answer to Stranger Things; an action-adventure starring younger actors that’s also more than happy to play to nostalgia. Teasers are emphasizing this, too; the Skeleton Crew trailer adapted Peter Schilling’s classic 1983 song “Major Tom (Coming Home),” and more recent teasers have used similar nostalgic approaches. This is very different to Stranger Things, of course; there’s no hint of the horror. Still, many of the elements feel familiar – and that’s a smart play for Lucasfilm.
RIght now, all attention is on the mystery of Jude Law’s character. Is he a secret Sith, an Inquisitor, a Jedi, or something new? Viewers will have to wait for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew‘s launch on December 3 to find out.
