The Penguin has already become perhaps the most beloved DC Universe series yet, and many now wonder how the events of the show will play into the upcoming The Batman – Part II. Introducing some incredible new characters, most notably Sofia Gigante, and giving Oz new depth have contributed to creating a compelling series. With many dark events, and a notable ascension for the titular villain, it remains to be seen how the events of the series will play into the story of The Batman – Part II and the larger universe.

Lauren LeFranc, the creator of The Penguin, recently spoke with Empire Magazine, where she provided some insight into the future. She first addressed the absence of Batman in the show, noting that the hero could not be everywhere at all times, explaining, “Just because we don’t see Batman in our show doesn’t mean he’s unaware or uncaring.” This means that the events of the show may not have been on Batman’s radar, but the fallout of those events likely will be.

LeFranc continued, noting how the series serves as a bridge between The Batman and its upcoming sequel. Referring to the closing shot of the series, where a Bat-signal could be seen in the sky from Penguin’s penthouse, LeFranc explained that the connection between Penguin and Batman will continue in upcoming film: “So don’t worry. The bat and the bird will clash again.”

The Penguin Will Remain An Important Part Of Matt Reeves’ Saga

LeFranc’s comments give a much better idea of how The Penguin was conceptualized as a side story within the larger universe. While Penguin was introduced in The Batman, the recent series was not about telling more Batman stories, but instead was focused on fleshing out the character of Oz Cobb. While the shadow of Batman hung over the story, it was not important for him to appear in the show and could have distracted from Oz’s narrative. An appearance would have been fun, but was ultimately unnecessary.

Fortunately, it appears that more direct conflicts between Oz and Batman have been planned from the beginning. LeFranc’s comments suggest how important Oz is to the future of this universe, and that he will certainly play a role in the upcoming film. Whether or not that ultimate conflict between him and Batman occurs in the next sequel, or later in the saga, it seems that there is a larger plan at work for this The Batman universe. With so many complex characters to flesh out, The Penguin has done a great job setting a template for the universe’s future.

LeFranc And Reeves Have Proven Themselves Worthy Of Audience Trust

The Penguin and its perfect episodes have created an incredible show. From here, I feel good about whatever the architects of this universe wish to do with it. Oz Cobb is clearly a strong and compelling villain who stands on his own and, while I’d love to see him beaten down by Batman, I would also gladly watch a Penguin season 2. With such compelling stories, The Penguin has crafted a truly compelling and terrifying villain. Whatever they decide to do with him next when he appears in The Batman – Part II will almost certainly be the right choice.
