“He’s Got Some Tricks Up His Sleeve”: Captain America: Brave New World Director Addresses Sam Wilson Fighting Red Hulk Without Any Powers
Captain America: Brave New World is set to launch the newest version of the iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe hero, and the movie’s director has addressed how Sam Wilson is able to take on Red Hulk without any superpowers. While previous versions of Captain America in both John Walker and Steve Rogers were powered with the Super Soldier Serum, Sam Wilson is not. Though his flight suit will certainly play a part in his combat abilities, this has raised concerns about how the hero will be able to contend against the MCU’s Red Hulk and his immense superstrength.
Speaking with Empire Magazine in their latest issue, director Julius Onah opened up about the experience of pitting Captain America against President Ross. As has been shown in the latest Captain America: Brave New World trailer, Harrison Ford will be transforming into the enormous villain, which has led to plenty of conversations about the character and his power level. Onah, however, seems to believe that mere power is not the most important thing for Sam. He explained his reasoning, stating:
“These guys are incredible fighters, and Sam has been there and back. He’s got some tricks up his sleeve, and over the course of the film there are things he comes to learn that become other tools in his arsenal, when he’s facing even the most impossible of threats.”
Onah’s comments suggest that Sam has already built a large arsenal of abilities that he will be able to pull on during this outsized conflict. While Red Hulk may seem like an impossible threat to face, Sam Wilson has already overcome much in his time in the Marvel Universe. Following this, it makes sense that the hero may be able to provide a sufficient challenge to the Red Hulk in the upcoming Marvel film.
The Captain American And Red Hulk Fight Will Not Be Based Only On Power
Onah’s comments make sense for the upcoming story, as a physical confrontation between Red Hulk and Sam Wilson based on raw power would surely not work out for the latter. Even a character like Steve Rogers, who has received the Super Soldier Serum, would likely lose against any Hulk. As a result, it is important that instead of focusing on the physical part of this battle, there are more tricks and twists integrated. This can contribute to a satisfying face-off for the two characters in the film.
It is important that Sam Wilson’s Captain America be given the opportunity to prove himself in this film, as he is set to be a major part of the next Avengers team. Fortunately, these comments seem to indicate that Sam’s knowledge and adaptability will play a major part in the upcoming conflict with the transformed Red Hulk. The fight will surely not end with only punches being thrown, and Sam will likely emerge victorious.
Power levels in superhero media can become meaningless at a certain point, so I believe it is important that these conflicts be about other things. However Red Hulk’s strength is established, it is key that Captain America find a way to defeat or outmanouevre him. This will hopefully be done in a clever and unexpected way that allows audiences to feel connected to the character in Captain America: Brave New World, which will help further set up the titular hero for more in the MCU.
