Since the show’s pilot episode, From has drawn numerous comparisons to ABC’s 2004-2010 sci-fi mystery drama Lost, both of which see travelers becoming trapped in a supernatural location. For one, From’s cast is led by Lost’s Michael Dawson actor Harold Perrineau, with the MGM+ horror show also being executive produced by Lost director Jack Bender and writer Jeff Pinkner.

As From has progressed, it’s begun to follow some of the same beats of Lost’s story, with mystery upon mystery being introduced as the survivors seem to be more confused than ever. While it had subtly been built up for quite a while, From season 3 officially repeated Lost’s time travel twist, revealing in episode 8 that, like the island, the town doesn’t necessarily operate on a linear passage of time. Now, just one episode later, Fatima’s discovery of a trap door in the root cellar hints that another Lost-style twist might be coming in the season 3 finale.

The Root Cellar’s Trap Door Hints At Repeating LOST’s Hatch Twist

Could The Trap Door Unlock A Shocking Revelation About From’s Town, Like Lost’s Hatch?

Though Elgin states that she’s not a prisoner there, he brought Fatima to the root cellar by tricking her, with the baby attacking her internally when she tries to leave. While there, Fatima has to drink Elgin’s blood in order to feed both herself and the baby, making the true nature of what’s growing inside her all the more disturbing to imagine. When Elgin leaves, Fatima tries to find ways to escape, which includes breaking off a metallic piece from the bed frame as a potential weapon.

At one point, while Fatima is on the ground in pain from the baby, she accidentally begins to dig around the dirt and happens upon a chain. When she pulls on the chain and digs further around the area, Fatima finds a trap door in the root cellar. Seemingly being her best chance to escape from the room, Fatima fully uncovers the trap door, but once she starts trying to pull it open, it won’t budge. However, her efforts to open the door are stopped when the Kimono Woman’s ghost appears, covering Fatima’s mouth while pinning her to the bed.

Fatima uncovering the root cellar’s trap door in From season 3, episode 9 calls to mind a major revelation from halfway through Lost season 1. At the end of Lost season 1, episode 11, Boone and Locke were in the jungle when the latter threw a flashlight that accidentally hit the ground, though the object unexpectedly made a metallic clanking sound. The two then began to dig around to uncover the steel structure, which revealed a mysterious hatch that was sealed shut in the middle of the jungle.

In Lost season 1, episode 19, Locke was banging on the hatch door when he saw a light turn on from within, revealing someone was down there. The hatch was finally opened in Lost’s season 1 finale, eventually revealing Desmond Hume’s history as the survivor inputting the hatch’s numbers in DHARMA Station 3, “The Swan.” The discovery of the hatch in Lost added various new layers to the show’s mysteries on the island, and the same could potentially be true for the trap door that Fatima found in From’s root cellar.

Where Could The Root Cellar’s Trap Door Lead In From?

The Trap Door Could Lead To The Tunnels Or Introduce A Brand-New Location

Since Fatima isn’t able to open the door before From season 3, episode 9’s ending, the show has still yet to reveal what lies beneath. The most likely answer is that it leads to the town’s underground tunnels. In season 1, Tabitha began digging below her house and found an entrance to the tunnels, with Victor being sent by From’s Boy in White to retrieve her. The tunnels remain a big mystery, but they’re known to house some lost objects from residents, are where the monsters sleep, and are where the “Anghkooey” kids were seemingly sacrificed on the stone slabs.

The trap door could also potentially lead to the dungeons, where Julie recently returned in From season 3, episode 8. Julie’s trip there revealed that she could walk through time to various locations in town, such as the tunnel, so the trap door could be another entrance. Additionally, like the revelation of Lost’s hatch, From’s trap door in the root cellar could introduce a brand-new hidden location, unraveling new layers of the town’s mysteries that perhaps connect to whoever – or whatever – controls the supernatural forces.

From’s Root Cellar Trap Door Could Introduce A New Character (Like Desmond In LOST)

A New Character Could Be Living Underneath The Root Cellar

If Fatima is finally able to open the root cellar’s trap door in From’s season 3 finale, then the show could introduce a brand-new character. The typical way for From to introduce new characters is to have them drive into town and become trapped, such as with the bus riders in season 2 and Acosta in season 3. However, From season 3 already debuted a new strategy to bring in fresh faces through Tabitha reaching the outside world and finding Victor’s father, Henry.

With the root cellar, From could take these changes further by potentially introducing a new character who has been trapped there all along, similar to Desmond Hume in Lost’s hatch. Desmond went on to become one of Lost’s most compelling characters throughout the entire series, and it was shocking to discover that he had been there the entire time that Jack and the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 had been on the island. From has no shortage of engaging characters, but it’s hard to believe that the established residents are the only people in town.

season 4 has still not been officially renewed by MGM+ ahead of the season 3 finale.

It’s unlikely that there will be another situation like the “Others” in Lost with another entire Township existing in this world, but there are certainly some ways that From could introduce new characters who have already been secretly living in Fromville. This could be accomplished through wherever the root cellar’s trap door leads, or finding new figures like the chained-up Martin through From’s confirmed time travel elements. The root cellar appears to be a lockbox for many tragedies and secrets of From’s past, so it may also be the key to debuting unexpected new characters.
