Daniel Craig In Talks For His First-Ever Superhero Movie Role As DCU World War II Hero Sgt. Rock
James Bond actor Daniel Craig is officially in talks to star in a DC StudiosSgt. Rock adaptation. James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe will open with a dozen projects across all genres, formats, tones, and eras, including live-action entries such as James Gunn’s Superman and the Lanterns miniseries, as well as animated series like Creature Commandos. Although the DCU’s “Gods and Monsters” chapter is already pretty crowded, more upcoming DC projects are yet to be officially announced.
As reported by Deadline, Queer director and star Luca Guadagnino and Daniel Craig will reunite for a Sgt. Rock movie. Justin Kuritzkes, who wrote Guadagnino’s Challengers and Queer, is also penning the script. Sgt. Rock will reportedly be the next film in the Guadagnino’s career.
What Daniel Craig’s Sgt. Rock Movie Casting Means
Sgt. Rock Will Be Daniel Craig’s First Comic Book Movie Role
In 2022, Daniel Craig almost played Balder the Brave in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ Illuminati scenes. However, Craig dropped out of the movie and Balder was swapped out of the MCU’s Illuminati team. Now, it seems like Daniel Craig’s comic book movie adaptation will take place in the DCU. DC’s Sgt. Rock comics follow the titular Army officer as he fights in WWII. Sgt. Rock doesn’t possess any superpowers, but his impressive combat skills made him a popular comic book hero in the 1970s.

Whether Sgt. Rock will take place in the DCU’s main continuity or in a self-contained universe is yet to be revealed. Sgt. Rock could tie into other DCU projects like Creature Commandos and Paradise Lost through flashbacks, or it could modernize the story in order to bring the titular character to the present day. Alternatively, Sgt. Rock could be a self-contained DC Elseworlds project similarly to Todd Phillips’ Joker movies and Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise.
Our Take On Daniel Craig’s Sgt. Rock Movie Casting
DC Could Follow In The Penguin And Joker’s Footsteps
Sgt. Rock‘s A-list casting and director may suggest that it won’t be a simple DCU entry like any other. With Daniel Craig and Luca Guadagnino on board, Sgt. Rock could be a more auteur-driven movie than most upcoming DC films. This formula worked successfully for Matt Reeves’ The Batman and The Penguin, as well as for Todd Phillips’ Joker, but not for Phillips’ Joker. Folie à Deux. If Sgt. Rock sticks to mainline DCU continuity, then Daniel Craig’s hero could benefit from future crossovers with DCU characters like Peacemaker, Rick Flag, and Superman himself.
