St. Denis Medical Cast & Character Guide
While St. Denis Medical’s blend of workplace comedy and medical drama might be a fresh new concept, the sitcom is full of familiar faces. NBC’s new sitcom St. Denis Medical follows the staff of the eponymous hospital as they attempt to keep the struggling institution running smoothly. St. Denis Medical is a workplace mockumentary sitcom that takes the premise of Scrubs and brings the style of The Office and Abbott Elementary to the project. This results in a sitcom that feels both original and familiar at the same time thanks to St. Denis Medical’s added medical drama.

The heroine of St. Denis Medical is Allison Tolman’s Alex, a controlling Registered Nurse who spends the pilot trying and failing to leave work on time for her daughter’s school musical. There is also the arrogant surgeon Bruce, who provides the best jokes in St. Denis Medical’s pilot, the world-weary veteran doctor Ron, and the ambitious, bumbling executive director Joyce. An inexperienced new nurse and a confident older nurse round out the cast of St. Denis Medical, ensuring the hospital has characters from a range of generations and levels of professional experience.

Joyce is the ambitious, but somewhat clueless executive director of St. Denis Medical. She means well and can handle a crisis, but has a terrible tendency to prioritize flashy appearances over more important matters.
Allison Tolman as Alex
Born in Texas, Allison Tolman acted for ten years before her breakout role in 2014’s Fargo season 1. Despite working alongside Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman, Tolman earned the lion’s share of critical praise for the series thanks to her assured portrayal of the exasperated cop Molly. This led to supporting roles in Krampus, The Gift, and The Sisters Brothers, but TV was where Tolman’s star truly shined. She played Captain Olivia Crawford in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Mary Pat in Good Girls, and Alma in Why Women Kill season 2.

Alex is the heart of St. Denis Medical, although even she wouldn’t deny she is a workaholic. NBC’s medical sitcom might see the heroine address this unhealthy work-life balance as the show continues, but it is unlikely that the titular location will ever calm down enough for Alex to take regular breaks from the chaos.
David Alan Grier As Ron
June 30, 1956
Born in Detroit, David Alan Grier is an icon of American TV and film. The actor began his career with a supporting role in 1983’s Robert Altman drama Streamers and has since been seen in everything from I’m Gonna Git You Sucka to The Player, to Tales from the Hood to Stuart Little. However, this list is not where most viewers know him from. Grier played Carl Bentley in Jumanji, and the star played various roles in the hit ‘90s comedy series In Living Color as well as a supporting role in Martin. More recently, Grier has appeared in They Cloned Tyrone, Candy Cane Lane, and The Color Purple.

Ron is a sardonic veteran who challenges Joyce’s silly spending and Alex’s controlling attitude at work, but has some demons of his own as well. Ron briefly mentions his off-screen divorce in the show’s pilot, and only time will tell whether St. Denis Medical expands on this plot line later.
St. Denis Medical Supporting Cast and Characters
Superstore star Josh Lawson and Cocaine Bear’s Kahyun Kim round out the cast of St. Denis Medical as the surgeon Bruce and the nurse Serena, respectively. The Sex Lives of College Girls guest star Mekki Leeper plays the newcomer Matt, a Registered Nurse whose sheltered religious upbringing left him ill-prepared for the mile-a-minute workplace. Between them, the members of this lineup ensure that St. Denis Medical has a diverse range of characters to base the show’s unique blend of medical drama and workplace character comedy around, meaning season 1 can tell all manner of stories in the eponymous hospital.
