Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Character Details Finally Revealed By Creator Jon Watts
With Star Wars: Skeleton Crew just over a month away, the next Star Wars TV show’s creator, Jon Watts, has revealed new details about its brand-new characters. The cast of Skeleton Crew is a wonderful bunch, from Academy Award-nominee Jude Law to Steve Urkel actor Jamal Williams, with the main four children actors leading the way for the rest. Skeleton Crew‘s story is set to focus on these kids as they get lost within the galaxy, bringing both themselves and the audience on a one-of-a-kind adventure. By the sound of it, these characters will certainly make the story.
Watts, known for his work on the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy, has provided new insight to StarWars.com about what viewers can expect from Skeleton Crew‘s characters. From familiar faces to bright-eyed newbies, these Star Wars characters flesh out a wonderful cast to bring this whimsical tale to life. Here’s everything Watts has revealed about the leading characters of Skeleton Crew.
Ravi Cabot-Conyers’s Wim Is Filled With Wide-Eyed Wonder
True To His Character’s Name
Watts describes Ravi Cabot-Conyers’ Wim as “a total starry-eyed dreamer who just rushes into any situation before he’s thought about it for one second,” and likens Wim’s character to Cabot-Conyers’ true, excited nature. This is the perfect kind of character to have leading this show; in a story where the Star Wars galaxy will be seen through the eyes of children, it’s important to have a child like this that everyone can relate to. This kind of childlike wonder will bring the magic of the galaxy to life, and will certainly resonate with much of its audience.
Ryan Kiera Armstrong’s Fern Has The Duality Of Princess Leia
She Becomes A Fearless Leader
As for Kiera Armstrong’s Fern, Watts has a Star Wars character who serves as her direct inspiration: Princess Leia herself. “We wanted a kid that was really smart and could play the good, sweet daughter of someone in the government,” Watts reveals, “but also be a tough rebel trying to stand up to bullies.” Watts asserts that Armstrong has “that intelligence and duality,” which made her intentional in all her decisions while acting. This duality is already seen in Fern in Skeleton Crew‘s trailer, as she easily and calmly takes the lead of their ragtag group.
Kyriana Kratter’s KB Is “Strangely Quiet & Thoughtful”
Kratter Herself Inspired This Character’s Personality
Interestingly enough, co-creator Chris Ford has revealed that Kyriana Kratter’s portrayal of KB is what ultimately shaped her character in Skeleton Crew, transforming what was written in early drafts for Fern’s best friend. “I remember when we saw Kyriana’s audition for KB and she was just kind of strangely quiet and thoughtful,” Ford explains, assuring audiences that it was a very specific choice to adhere to this portrayal. KB already sounds like a perfect balance for her best friend, adding what will no doubt be a necessary contemplative member of an otherwise excitable group.
How Robert Timothy Smith Shaped Neel’s Character
He Brought Comedic Edge To Neel’s Sweetness
Kratter wasn’t the only one who changed the shape of her character. According to Watts, Robert Timothy Smith accomplished the same feat with Neel, with Watts lovingly describing Smith as “a total wild card.” While Neel was initially thought to be “this sweet, shy little blue elephant-like alien,” Smith “always came at it at this other oblique angle,” which Watts accredits to him being a “comedian” with various jokes and bits that still land sweetly. Many viewers are already endeared to Neel, and it sounds as if the comedic edge to his sweetness will only make him more beloved.
Jude Law’s Jod Na Nawood Is A Mysterious Rogue
This Scoundrel Has Secrets
Ford still maintains the mystery around Jude Law’s mysterious character Jod Na Nawood, who, in the past, has been described as a “different kind of Jedi.” As it turns out, Law was very much involved with how Jod came to life, as his own personal love for Star Wars drove him to developing ideas that brought the “sense of rogueishness” Ford and Watts were looking for to life. Jod sounds like a scoundrel who gets stuck with these children and has to make the most of the situation, which likely means a sweet transformation awaits him in this story.
Nick Frost’s SM-33 Rounds Out The Cast
Another Lovable Droid
Last but certainly not least is Nick Frost’s SM-33, a name that’s derived directly from the classic pirate Smee. Watts reveals the process behind how they got SM-33’s personality on set despite him being a droid, with them making use of prerecorded dialogue to have Nick Frost’s “great and specific comedic timing” to help “everyone understand the tone and the vibe of SM-33.” It sounds as if SM-33 will be a great rival to K-2SO of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as a droid with its own humorous personality, providing light to Skeleton Crew‘s dangerous journey.
