Superman & Lois Completely Rewrites One Of DC’s Most Beloved Man Of Steel Stories
WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Superman & Lois season 4, episode 3.Superman & Lois has just made a major change to one of the Man of Steel’s most important stories, and it can make season 4 even better. With only ten episodes this time around, Superman & Lois‘ final season has been a thrill ride, with one major event after the other. That stays true for episode 3 of the DC show, which featured multiple exciting twists and a dark fate for a beloved character. Michael Cudlitz’s Lex Luthor and Doomsday continue to be the most terrifying duo of villains that the Kent family has ever had to deal with.
Superman & Lois‘ season 3 ending put Tyler Hoechlin’s Kal-El up against Doomsday, who Lex Luthor created after experimenting on the show’s version of Bizarro. After their fight was cut short, Superman & Lois‘ season 4 two-episode premiere showed the final part of that enormous battle, with Doomsday killing Hoechlin’s Superman, surviving, and delivering his heart to Lex Luthor. Now, episode 3 of the show’s final season brings a major new step to Superman & Lois‘ version of “The Death of Superman” story from DC Comics, and there are key changes to how the show has adapted the iconic tale.
Superman & Lois’ Death & Resurrection Plot Completely Changes The Original Comic Story
The DC Series Ups The Drama
Superman & Lois season 4 makes major changes to both the events that culminate in Superman’s death, as well as how the Man of Steel is resurrected. Like in the comics, Doomsday is responsible for killing Kal-El in Superman & Lois. However, both characters killed each other as they fought in front of the Daily Planet in DC Comics. The superhero series took a different turn, setting the final part of the duo’s battle on the moon and space, with Superman being killed by Doomsday while the monster lived and took Clark Kent’s heart to Lex Luthor.

Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum are trying to get a Smallville sequel series made, and the show would be the ideal replacement for Superman & Lois.
The changes to DC’s “The Death of Superman” do not stop with how the character died, as Superman & Lois season 4 has revealed that the way Hoechlin’s Man of Steel comes back to life includes a key difference from the comics. With Doomsday still alive, the monster kills General Sam Lane. As he had injected himself with a serum containing Superman’s blood, Lane’s sacrifice allows his heart to be used as a replacement for Clark’s. At the end of episode 3, Superman opens his eyes. In the comics, Clark comes back through the Fortress of Solitude’s Kryptonian Regeneration Matrix.
Superman & Lois’ Death Of Superman Story Changes Make The DC Show More Interesting
The Final Season Of Superman & Lois Is Unpredictable
Superman & Lois making changes to “The Death of Superman” is a good thing. The show is taking iconic elements from that storyline and adding new events to it, making a well-rounded story that is not only exciting for fans who are seeing Superman die for the first time, but also keeps long-time fans on their toes. A simple retelling of the story would not have nearly as big of an impact as what Superman & Lois season 4 is doing. Now, both comic book readers and fans of the show have to keep guessing what happens next.
While the show’s creators originally wanted Superman & Lois to last seven seasons — at least — those plans had to shift due to factors outside of their hands.
That level of unpredictability is exactly what is needed for Superman & Lois‘ final season. While the show’s creators originally wanted Superman & Lois to last seven seasons — at least — those plans had to shift due to factors outside of their hands. With a shortened ten-episode final season, every new hour of Superman & Lois needs to have non-stop action, drama, character interactions, and surprises. By putting its own spin on such a major story as “The Death of Superman,” the DC series keeps itself fresh and exciting in its final season.
Superman & Lois’ Comic Changes Bode Well For The Show’s Finale
Season 4 Continues To Feature Superman’s Hardest Villain To Defeat
After its first three episodes, Superman & Lois season 4 is better due to its changes to “The Death of Superman.” Clark Kent might be alive again, but there is no telling whether Superman will be back to full strength. The Man of Steel now has a human heart, which is a new development in his long DC history, and so that could lead to his powers being weaker when he returns, or perhaps Clark could end up becoming human by the end of the series.
While Clark gets back on his feet, Steel serves as Superman & Lois‘ main hero. Steel and Starlight were called upon to lead their own team at the DOD, though they could not take Doomsday head-on. Superman & Lois chose to keep Doomsday alive instead of killing him like in the comics, and that major decision could lead to the death of many key characters before the show is over. Since many cast members had their roles reduced for the final season due to budget cuts, anyone could go at any time, making Superman & Lois season 4 tense.
Superman & Lois, the seventh Arrowverse spinoff series, will take the titular characters from Metropolis to Smallville. The CW series is set in the aftermath of the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover, which saw the multiverse collapse and the merging of worlds into what is now Earth Prime. Superman & Lois sees Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) and Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) dealing with all the pressures of their jobs, along with being parents to two teenage sons. Lois and Clark are no strangers to the Arrowverse, with Hoechlin’s Superman having been introduced all the way back in Supergirl season 2. Meanwhile, Tulloch’s Lois made her debut in the 2018 “Elseworlds” crossover. The duo is joined by a growing cast of characters that includes a new iteration of Lana Lang.
