How Can Scarlet Witch’s Son Return To The MCU?

How Can Scarlet Witch’s Son Return To The MCU?

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Agatha All AlongDue to all the rumors surrounding the supposedly imminent return of the Scarlet Witch’s son Billy Maximoff to the MCU, one has to wonder how a return is even possible in the first place. First debuting alongside his twin brother Tommy in WandaVision, Billy and his brother were the product of Wanda Maximoff’s grief-based creation of the Hex, a powerful dome of chaos magic placed over the town of Westview which gave her the perfect TV life and family she always wanted. However, WandaVision’s ending didn’t seem to be very kind to Billy and Tommy as far as their MCU futures were concerned.

Now that Agatha All Along has begun streaming on Disney+, rumors and theories have emerged suggesting the return of Billy Maximoff in particular, especially surrounding the mysterious character in Agatha Harkness’ new coven known only as “Teen” (played by Joe Locke). However, it needs to be asked how Billy could return in the first place based upon WandaVision’s ending. Here’s what we know about Billy Maximoff’s possible MCU return, what happened in the original comics, as well as our personal thoughts about whether he’ll actually return in Agatha All Along.

Billy Maximoff Died In WandaVision, Technically

Fading Away With The End Of Wanda’s Hex

Once Wanda realized the pain and suffering she’d been causing to the very real people of Westview with the Hex, The Scarlet Witch chose to bring the magical dome down at the end of WandaVision. However, this meant letting go of both the Vision she created and their children, as they had all been products of the Hex. Technically, this meant that both Billy and his brother died (though they were never really conventionally alive in the first place).

However, the post-credits scene of WandaVision saw Billy and Tommy calling out to their mother while she was reading the Darkhold, setting up her dark future goals in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to claim real versions of her boys from another reality in the multiverse. However, Wanda eventually overcomes her corruption by the Darkhold by the end of the MCU movie, destroying every copy of the book by bringing down Mount Wundagore on top of her. As a result, there is currently no Billy nor Tommy alive in the MCU primary 616 reality, and the same goes for the Scarlet Witch herself.

How Agatha All Along Is Setting Up Billy’s Return

Joe Locke’s Mysterious “Teen” Is The Most Likely Candidate

Now, the few episodes of Agatha All Along that have been released thus far have revealed a mysterious teenager (Joe Locke) who has freed Harkness from the spell Wanda locked her in at the end of WandaVision. However, it’s been revealed that Teen’s real name has been blocked by a magical sigil, effectively hiding his identity and history from all witchkind. That said, trailers and posters for Agatha All Along have seen Teen wearing the same colors and headband as Wiccan, the Young Avenger whom Billy eventually becomes in the comics (and also the costume young Billy wore in WandaVision’s Halloween episode).

Likewise, it’s been theorized that Teen’s wish for Agatha to take him down the Witches’ Road may be a means to bring the Scarlet Witch back from the dead, assuming he’s indeed Billy. While there have been some hints that Teen might be Agatha’s own long-lost son Nicholas Scratch, most signs have been pointing to Teen eventually being revealed as a new and older version of Wanda’s son Billy Maximoff. Although the specifics as to how remain to be seen, the original comics do provide an answer for Billy’s potential return.

Marvel Comics Offers An Answer To How Billy Could Return

A Reincarnated Lost Soul Of Mephisto

Billy and Tommy in WandaVision and Mephisto in Marvel Comics

While the particulars are different compared to the MCU, the original comics versions of Billy and Tommy Maximoff were also created by Wanda’s magic. Likewise, The Scarlet Witch similarly had to let them go, having inadvertently created them using fragmented pieces of Mephisto’s soul which he tried to reabsorb. That said, Wanda’s love for her sons proved to be too powerful, and the reabsorption nearly destroyed the demon lord.

To that end, the lost soul fragments of the Maximoff boys eventually become reincarnated as Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepard, born to new families while still developing powers in their teens. Eventually becoming the Young Avengers Wiccan and Speed, Billy and Tommy discover their true past as brothers. This results in their subsequent reunion with Wanda whose memories of them had been erased years prior by the comics’ Agatha Harkness, having hoped to aid in Wanda’s grief when she first lost her sons.

How We Think Billy Could Return In Agatha All Along

Adapting The Comics With Reincarnation (But Also Some Surprising Twists)

On the whole, it’s hard to say exactly how Billy (or his brother) might return to the MCU, though the comics certainly provide the perfect precedent for the reincarnation route. Marvel Studios is possibly looking to keep following the comics’ lead, albeit with its own twists along the way, just as it did in WandaVision. That said, Joe Locke’s Teen certainly looks the part of a reincarnated Billy Maximoff/Kaplan, and Agatha All Along feels like the perfect project to confirm his return.

It does seem very likely some form of reincarnation will be how The Scarlet Witch’s son makes his MCU return.

It’s also worth noting that Mephisto himself was finally confirmed to exist in the MCU thanks to Agatha All Along. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the MCU’s Billy and Tommy will be revealed as fragmented pieces of Mephisto’s soul as in the comics. Additionally, the comics themselves have since retconned this part of their origins, with Mephisto simply having seen their lost souls as his to claim, rather than being parts of his own. At any rate, it does seem very likely some form of reincarnation will be how The Scarlet Witch’s son makes his MCU return.
