From Season 3 Finally Reveals Why The Matthews Family Originally Became Trapped In The Town
WARNING! This article contains major SPOILERS for From season 3, episode 2!Whether those who are trapped in From’s town came there randomly or by some external force’s influence was a huge mystery surrounding the show’s characters, and season 3 seems to have finally provided some clarification. The cast of characters in From all came to the Township under different circumstances with various tragedies, conflicts, and personal struggles they were dealing with on their ride into town. Whatever way they arrive, From’s characters become trapped in the inescapable Township where murderous nocturnal monsters stalk them each night, begging the question of why their road trips brought each of them to this location.
Putting together more pieces of the puzzle, From season 3, episode 2 reveals what originally brought Victor and his family to the Township over 40 years prior. According to Victor’s father, Henry, who has been living in Camden, Maine since his family’s disappearance, his wife, Miranda, had recurring visions of children trapped in a tower in some inescapable town, and she was the only person who could free them. Soon after, Miranda, Victor, and Eloise drove into this fateful town that no one could escape. Now, Victor’s father believes that Tabitha was given the same duty by the Township.
The Town “Chose” Tabitha To Free The Children From The Tower, Just Like Victor’s Mother
Tabitha & Her Family Weren’t Brought To The Town By Chance
If Henry is correct about Miranda being called to the Township by mysterious forces in order to free the children, then this also provides the reason why Tabitha and the Matthews family were brought there in From season 1. After From season 2’s ending gave more details about Victor’s mother seeing the children and going to the tower to free them, only for her to tragically be killed in the monsters’ massacre of the town, season 3 explains that Miranda had visions of them long before she even arrived at the Township.
Rather than somehow being pulled into the town on a road trip, like many other trapped victims, Victor’s mother intentionally set out to find the town and those children. This isn’t entirely the case for Tabitha’s initial arrival at From’s town, but she was still brought there for the same reason. Tabitha, her husband Jim, daughter Julie, and son Ethan unintentionally came to the Township while on a family road trip to Yellowstone, and she didn’t start experiencing visions of From’s “Anghkooey” children until her arrival.
Tabitha and Miranda are far from the first people to be “chosen” to save the children – though Tabitha is the first to successfully leave the town from the tower.
However, like Victor’s mother, she was eventually compelled to save the children from the tower, leading her to From’s lighthouse portal in the season 2 finale. Tabitha may not have been aware of her calling before arriving at the Township, but the story of Victor’s mother confirms that she and her family were brought there by some supernatural forces for that same purpose. Additionally, Victor’s father reveals that Tabitha and Miranda are far from the first people to be “chosen” to save the children – though Tabitha is the first to successfully leave the town from the tower.
Was Thomas’ Death The Reason For Tabitha Being Chosen?
Tabitha’s Guilt May Have Led To Her Being Chosen
The theory that Victor’s father poses about Tabitha and Miranda in From season 3 doesn’t explain exactly why the children chose and called out to them. They first appeared to Miranda after she was tripping on LSD, and first appeared to Tabitha when she became trapped in the town. Since Miranda was only briefly seen in From season 2, episode 8’s flashbacks, it’s unclear what other connections she shares with Tabitha that could explain them both being chosen. So far, the only link seems to be that Miranda and Tabitha had a daughter, son, and husband that they loved.
Jim and Tabitha’s youngest son, Thomas, died as an infant falling off a changing table shortly before the start of the series’ events.
The introduction of Victor’s father will inevitably provide more details about the family’s backstory prior to being trapped in the town. Given Tabitha had recently suffered a tragedy with the death of her and Jim’s infant son Thomas, the kids may have chosen her because of her vulnerability and desire to relieve her guilt by saving other children, as she couldn’t do so with her own son. If so, then Miranda may have been chosen for a similar reason that From season 3 has yet to disclose through Henry and Tabitha’s story in Camden, Maine.
What From’s Tabitha Reveal Means For The Other Residents’ Origins In The Town
The Matthews & Victor Aren’t The Only Ones Brought There For A Deeper Purpose
With Tabitha and Victor’s families being called to the town for purposes related to the children, this revelation suggests that chance had nothing to do with each character arriving at From‘s town. Jade’s reason appears to be connected to the symbol and caves, Boyd’s likely has to do with keeping the town together, and Kristi may have been recruited to give the residents medical assistance. It’s clear that each character in From is being “tested” by the town’s supernatural forces, but each may find that they have a deeper purpose for their time in the trapped community.
