Agatha All Along’s Joe Locke Teases His Mystery MCU Character & Gushes Over Kathryn Hahn
Agatha All Along star Joe Locke details entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his Teen character in the Disney+ drama. While the WandaVision TV show may have ended with Agatha Harkness’ defeat against Scarlet Witch, Kathryn Hahn is far from done with the MCU timeline. This fall, Agatha returns to the small screen in her own spinoff series, Agatha All Along, which will extend her role in the franchise.
Following getting trapped as her Westview character, Agatha All Along explores the Marvel witch seeking to get her powers back. However, Hahn’s titular character will find herself with a new coven along the way as they walk the Witches’ Road. One of the players who will join Agatha’s journey in Agatha All Along is “Teen,” a mysterious character that Marvel Studios is keeping under wraps, played by Heartstopper’s Locke.
Screen Rant recently chatted with Locke about joining a big franchise like the MCU and serving a key role in Agatha All Along. Throughout the interview, Locke opens up about what influences he used for “Teen” and the fanboy nature he brings to the series, with his player being a huge admirer of Agatha. Locke also details his experience working with the Agatha All Along cast, including what he describes as “escape house” experiences.
Joe Locke Previews Teen’s MCU Debut In Agatha All Along
Screen Rant: When you first got this role, how did you balance out what to study for with your character between the comics and what we’ve already seen in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?
Joe Locke: Oh, I didn’t know what you were talking about, but with Teen, I just went off the scripts.
What intrigued you the most about the role once you started discovering your character in the scripts?
Joe Locke: Yeah. Well, Teen’s such a mysterious character. There’s so much from this point he’s introduced. There’s a mystery with him. There’s something to solve, which, as an actor, is a great thing to get to explore, to have things that are secret to everyone else, even in the characters in the room. It’s fun.
Teen “Is Very Much A Fanboy Follower” Of Agatha Harkness
Now, how would you describe Team’s dynamic with Agatha at the start of the show and how we see that relationship of progressed throughout the show?
Joe Locke: Yeah, I mean, at the start of the show, Teen is very much a fanboy follower of Agatha. He hasn’t got any of the power in the relationship and as the series goes on, things change.
What can you tease about your character’s connection with Rio, played by Aubrey Plaza?
Joe Locke: That they meet on the Witches’ Roads…Yeah, there’s nothing there.
Fair enough. Fair enough. Now talk to me about the [Witches’] Road. What can fans expect from the Road? Because the Road reminds me a little bit of the yellow brick road from the Wizard of Oz, so what can you tell me about that?
Joe Locke: Well, the Road is a very dangerous place, life or death, and not everyone survives. I think that one going in, the characters don’t realise what they’re putting themselves in for. It’s a real dangerous journey, but fun journey as well. And Teen enjoys it more than the other people do.
Now, what I love is when you guys get into some of these haunted house elements, it feels almost like you guys are in escape rooms. Can you talk about shooting some of that stuff with the ensemble?
Joe Locke: It literally was being in [a] escape room, which I love, so it was very fun. But one [in] episode three, we built this entire full-scale Hamptons beach house, which was weird and so much fun to do, and every trial is so different. There’s the water, there’s fire, everything. And it felt like literally being in an escape room. It was fun, and all these different costumes and tones.
The Costumes In Agatha All Along Are To Die For
“We’ve been saying today that the costumes hold all the secrets for the show.”
Speaking of costumes, I got to ask because it’s so much fun watching you guys go into some of these rooms and your costumes and wardrobe completely change. What’s been the favorite wardrobe that you guys were put in for Agatha All Along?
Joe Locke: We’ve been saying today that the costumes hold all the secrets for the show. If you look close enough, you’ll figure everything out. Our costume designer Daniel [Selon] put in so much detail into these costumes, and there’s things that you wouldn’t realize that us telling you what’s going to happen without noticing until you see it happen. You’re like, ‘Oh, now I see it.’
But that look was the one I wore the most, and it was the one that I really loved.
The Joy Of Working With Agatha All Along’s Kathryn Hahn
“Even the hardest scenes, I now always felt like she trusted me, and I trusted her.”
Kathryn Hahn is phenomenal in this, she’s so great as Agatha. She’s one of the characters that I love from WandaVision, and I’m really happy she’s getting a spotlight here. Can you talk about working with her as a collaborator in scenes with her?
Joe Locke:It was amazing. I’m so early in my career, touch wood, I carry on with that. But to get to learn to someone who is at the top of their game and is such a legend and just watching her work was just amazing. And being able to rally off that. She made everything so easy and so great and fun. Even the hardest scenes, I now always felt like she trusted me, and I trusted her, and we could just go for it, which is the dream as an actor to be able to just not have anything in the way [and] just going for it.
