Rey Will Officially Be The Last Skywalker
Although Rey Skywalker’s adoption of the last name Skywalker in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was (and remains) controversial, it’s clear that she’s canonically a Skywalker—and she will almost certainly be Star Wars‘ very last. The sequel trilogy was met with considerable criticism. In fact, among Star Wars movies and TV shows, the sequels are some of the most heavily debated, and many still see them as some of Star Wars’ worst movies.
While there were a number of Star Wars sequel trilogy problems that led to this mixed reception, the revelation at the end of The Rise of Skywalker that Rey had decided to take the last name Skywalker as her own was one of the most controversial. Nevertheless, Star Wars has been clear that Rey Skywalker is her canon name, making her the final living Skywalker. Now, with Rey’s upcoming Star Wars movie, it’s very likely Rey truly will be Star Wars’ final Skywalker.
Rey Was Accepted Into The Skywalker Lineage
Rey taking on the last name Skywalker may have been controversial in the franchise, but the Skywalker family seemed more than happy to accept Rey. That was no doubt the message The Rise of Skywalker was trying to communicate at the movie’s end, when Rey said that her last name is Skywalker as Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa smiled down upon her as Force ghosts. In fact, that moment was about as direct a seal of approval as possible.
Moreover, Star Wars has continued to refer to her as Rey Skywalker, suggesting that this will be reinforced in her new Star Wars movie, rumored to be titled Star Wars: New Jedi Order. While it may have come as a surprise, particularly as The Rise of Skywalker was meant to be the end of the Skywalker Saga, the franchise has been clear. Skywalker is canonically Rey’s last name, and that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon. However, her upcoming movie also suggests she will truly be the last Skywalker in the franchise.
Rey’s New Jedi Rules Will Forbid Her Continuing The Skywalker Line
The Jedi rule against attachments was introduced in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and it became a defining aspect of the Jedi. However, given the rumored title of Rey’s new movie, it’s safe to assume she will be establishing a brand-new Jedi Order. While this inevitably means bringing back many of the original Jedi Order’s rules and practices, the newness of Rey’s Order and the at times flawed nature of the first Jedi Order—which in part led to its downfall—called into question whether Rey would uphold this rule.
Rey will not have any children, meaning that there will (presumably) be no one to carry on the Skywalker name.
Recently, though, Daisy Ridley has been clear that she expects Rey’s Jedi Order will also forbid attachments. In light of this, Rey will not have any children, meaning that there will (presumably) be no one to carry on the Skywalker name. Yes, Rey adopted the name herself, but it would be a bit of an odd pattern for someone else to now take the name on after her.
Admittedly, this is a bit disappointing, as it would have been interesting to see a Jedi Order that permitted attachments. After all, characters like Kanan Jarrus have made it clear that Jedi can have attachments and still be committed to the way of the Jedi and the light side of the Force. Nevertheless, given the likelihood that attachments will remain forbidden in Star Wars, Rey Skywalker will almost certainly be the last Skywalker in the franchise.
