Who Eloise Ends Up With In Bridgerton

Who Eloise Ends Up With In Bridgerton

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Julia Quinn’s To Sir Phillip, With Love and Bridgerton season 3.

Summary

  • Eloise’s future in Bridgerton may shift from the books to the show, with potential changes in her romantic story.
  • The possible alteration of Eloise’s marriage to Phillip Crane in the show might be wise due to problematic elements in the book.
  • Bridgerton could also opt to leave Eloise single, or she could fall in love with someone who isn’t a man.

Eloise may wind up with one person in the Bridgerton books, but it’s possible the show will change course. In the Netflix series, Eloise constantly expresses disinterest in courtship and marriage. There is a brief moment in season 2 where she thinks she might care for a working-class boy named Theo Sharpe, but Bridgerton quickly drops the idea as soon as it’s introduced. At the end of season 3, Eloise heads off to Scotland with Francesca, her new husband, John Stirling, and John’s cousin, Michaela.

Eloise is not settling down anytime soon. She wants to change the world and feels she must see it first in order to do so. However, all eight Bridgerton siblings eventually have their own love interests, including Eloise. While her book counterpart is also disinterested in marriage, she finds true love in her way and on her terms. Although the books introduce Eloise in The Duke and I, her romance occurs in To Sir Phillip, With Love.

Who Eloise Ends Up With In Bridgerton

All About Her Husband Sir Phillip Crane In The Books

In To Sir Phillip, With Love, Eloise marries Phillip Crane, a botanist who grows up with an abusive father. Phillip is close with his older brother George until George unexpectedly dies, leaving Phillip to inherit the Crane titles, wealth, and properties. This inheritance includes the betrothal agreement between George and Marina Thompson, a distant cousin of the Bridgertons. Phillip reluctantly runs the Crane estate, as his true passion is botany. He has two children with Marina, twins named Amanda and Oliver.

After giving birth, Marina struggles with postpartum depression and attempts to take her own life by jumping into a freezing lake. Phillip tries to save Marina, but she catches a sickness, which she eventually succumbs to. When Eloise writes to express her condolences, she and Phillip begin corresponding despite never meeting in person. He asks for her hand in marriage, and while she’s surprised, she decides to meet him. Eventually, their relationship blossoms into a true romance.

Eloise and Phillip have three children together: Penelope, Georgiana, and Frederick.

Why Eloise’s Bridgerton Books Ending Is So Hard For The Show

The Show Already Introduced Marina And Phillip

In Bridgerton season 1, Marina is introduced as a distant cousin of the Featheringtons rather than the Bridgertons. Because of this change, Eloise and Marina’s closest connection in the show is their mutual friendship with Penelope and Marina’s brief engagement to Eloise’s brother, Colin. In Bridgerton‘s current timeline, Marina is still living quite happily with the twins and Phillip, though their relationship is not romantic. Even if Marina were to die in the show, it’s hard to imagine Eloise reaching out to Phillip and the two of them getting together in the same way they do in the books.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that there are some pretty substantial issues with Phillip and Marina’s relationship and how it’s portrayed in the books. For one, it could be argued the novel demonizes Marina’s struggle with depression and the impact it has on how she cares for her children. In the book, Phillip is also violent and neglectful of the twins, and there is even a passage where Phillip has raped Marina.

Due to this, Bridgerton faces a challenge in making Phillip a character audiences will love. Eloise’s personality is also much stronger in the show, and she would not settle for a violent man who does not care about his children.

Could Bridgerton Change Eloise’s Story?

What Julia Quinn Has To Say And How The Show Can Change Eloise’s Ending

It’s worth keeping in mind that Bridgerton could significantly alter Eloise’s romance with Phillip or even scrap it entirely. In a 2021 interview with CosmopolitanSpain, Quinn pointed out that she is “not part of the writing process of the series.” Quinn is “only a consultant” and sees “the scripts when they are finished.”

Quinn further clarified that “those kinds of changes are up to them.” However, Bridgerton has not changed anything fundamental about the romances so far. The show has altered the sibling order and turned Michael Stirling into Michaela Stirling, but the heart of each romance has stayed the same.

It’s possible the show takes the same approach with Eloise and Phillip, simply changing the circumstances of how they get together. As Marina and Phillip are not actually in love, ideally, the show would introduce divorce, a possible concept because Bridgerton is already a fantasy Regency show. This could allow Marina to have a happy ending rather than a tragic one like in the books. The show also hasn’t portrayed much of Phillip’s more problematic behavior from the books yet and could opt to exclude it.

Of course, it’s also possible Bridgerton eliminates Eloise and Phillip’s relationship altogether, leaving him offscreen and relatively content with Marina and the twins. Considering Eloise’s decision at the end of season 3, it’s feasible that she stays unmarried or falls in love with someone who isn’t a man, perhaps in Scotland. As Bridgerton has yet to confirm which character will be the focus of season 4, viewers will have to wait a bit longer to see how the show adapts Eloise’s future.
