Scarlet Witch’s MCU Return Took Seconds For Agatha All Along To Set Up
Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Agatha All Along episodes 1 & 2.
Agatha All Along opens the door for more stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s magic corner, and among them is the tease of the Scarlet Witch’s return. Wanda Maximoff and Agatha Harkness are linked in the MCU. Kathryn Hahn’s villain started her journey in the franchise in WandaVision, where she was revealed to have been manipulating Wanda’s Hex for her own gain, in hopes of stealing the Scarlet Witch’s power. However, her plan backfired, with Wanda becoming more powerful than ever and trapping Agatha in a spell as her Agnes persona, which is where Agatha All Along‘s story picks up.
After taking the Darkhold from Agatha and trapping the witch under a spell in Westview, the Scarlet Witch went through quite a shocking journey. Wanda tries to find her sons across the multiverse, going on a murderous rampage in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. At the end of the movie, the Scarlet Witch sees the error in her ways and destroys all versions of the Darkhold before Mount Wundagore collapses on top of her, killing Wanda. While she has not been confirmed for Agatha All Along‘s cast, Wanda has proven to be a key part of the show.
Agatha All Along’s Scarlet Witch MCU Return Setup Explained
The Marvel Series Takes No Time Teasing Wanda’s Return
Agatha All Along takes little time setting up the Scarlet Witch’s possible return to the MCU. The first episode of the new MCU series started with Agatha Harkness still under the Scarlet Witch’s spell. Three years after being trapped, Agatha still lives in Westview and believes that she is Agnes. In great WandaVision fashion, Agatha All Along begins with an episode inspired by a genre of TV, with Agnes as a police detective in a true-crime story. Interestingly, the Jane Doe that she finds would later be revealed to be Wanda Maximoff.
Herb, who previously appeared in
WandaVision
and works with Agnes in the police in the episode, replies, ”
Oh, she’s really, most sincerely, dead
“.
However, it is not the Scarlet Witch’s real body, as the spell is playing tricks on Agatha’s mind. Still, the investigation over Jane Doe’s death brings along a clear tease regarding Elizabeth Olsen’s character. Agnes asks, “She is dead though, isn’t she Herb?” Herb, who previously appeared in WandaVision and works with Agnes in the police in the episode, replies, “Oh, she’s really, most sincerely, dead“. While that could have been the end of the exchange, acknowledging the Scarlet Witch’s death, Agnes says, “You never know,” and winks, teasing that the Scarlet Witch’s MCU journey could have a new chapter.
Will Agatha All Along Really Bring Back The Scarlet Witch?
The Witches’ Road Holds Many Secrets
Olsen’s Scarlet Witch has grown into one of the MCU’s most popular characters. With her last appearance having been as a villain, it is hard to believe that Marvel Studios would just kill Wanda off without giving her a shot at redemption. Agatha All Along‘s Scarlet Witch tease could result in the character coming back to the MCU in the series. With Agatha and her coven walking down the Witches’ Road, Wanda Maximoff could be at the end of it. That could work in two ways, with one being that maybe Wanda’s return is how Agatha gets her magic back.
Successfully reaching the end of the Witches’ Road gives those who walk it the thing they want the most.
Another way is through Joe Locke’s “Teen,” who has been heavily speculated to be Billy Kaplan, one of Wanda’s reincarnated sons. The mystery surrounding his backstory in the show surely points that way, and his prize for successfully walking the Witches’ Road could be reuniting with his mother. While Agatha All Along could bring back the Scarlet Witch, Wanda’s return is not likely. The Scarlet Witch’s rampage and death were major events that need to be dealt with on a bigger stage, and Agatha All Along could not do it justice in just one or two episodes.
What Elizabeth Olsen Has Said About Returning As Scarlet Witch
The Actress Is Open To Coming Back
While Wanda Maximoff’s return to the MCU has yet to be confirmed, Elizabeth Olsen has addressed the Scarlet Witch’s possible return. Recently, on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Olsen shared some hopeful comments about coming back as Wanda. The actress hopes Marvel leaves a window open for her to return, saying, “We need to find the smartest writers to figure out how to make [Wanda’s return from the dead] make sense.” Interestingly, Olsen’s new perspective on Wanda’s MCU future seems different from what it was a year ago.
Speaking about her Scarlet Witch role in June 2023 on Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, Olsen said that she did not miss playing Wanda. The actress wanted to explore other characters, so it “becomes less about the Marvel of it all.” Olsen’s new comments are much more positive regarding a return to the MCU, and that could be telling. The same happened with Robert Downey Jr. pre-Oppenheimer and just before he was announced as the MCU’s Doctor Doom. That similarity could be indicative of a return for the Scarlet Witch, either in Agatha All Along or some place else.
