“I’m Gonna Be The New Kingpin Of Gotham”: The Penguin Trailer Reveals Lots Of New Footage From The Batman Spinoff
A new trailer for HBO’s The Penguin reveals what’s next for Colin Farrell’s DC villain and what Gotham City will look like after the events of The Batman. With Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II gearing up for release in October 2026, Reeves’ DC Elseworlds continuity expands with the release of HBO’s upcoming The Penguin series, which will follow Oswald Cobblepot as he shakes the criminal underworld to become Gotham’s next big criminal. HBO’s The Penguin marks the first time Cobblepot stars in his own live-action DC project.
On YouTube, Max‘s official account released a new teaser trailer for Lauren LeFranc and Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman spinoff The Penguin, set to release its first episode on September 19. In it, Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot teases that he’s “the new kingpin of Gotham” and that “a storm is coming”, while Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone gets ready to take over her late father’s criminal empire. What The Penguin’s New Trailer Reveals About The DC Spinoff Show
Gotham’s Criminal Hierarchy Will Change In HBO’s The Penguin Series
The Penguin trailer presents the two protagonists’ main goals. Oswald Cobblepot aims to fill in the gap left by Carmine Falcone’s death in The Batman‘s ending, bringing “a storm” along with him. In true Penguin fashion, Cobblepot’s attempt to rise through the criminal ranks will bring all kinds of chaos, from other criminals likely putting a bounty on him to the Iceberg Lounge blowing up. It seems like the Penguin’s path to kingpinship will be littered with obstacles, but it also seems like he’s facing few major threats like the Riddler, the Joker, and the Batman — at least for now.
Meanwhile, Sofia Falcone deals with her father’s death by following in his footsteps. In The Penguin trailer, Sofia says “so much was taken from me. So I’m going to take from them now.” It’s unclear what kind of relationship Sofia used to have with Carmine, but it’s pretty clear that she will take advantage of his death at the hands of the Riddler to take over his empire. Sofia seems to be joining forces with the Penguin to conquer Gotham’s criminal underworld, but their alliance might not last too long under the intense hardships they’re bound to face.
Since the Penguin is the first The Batman character to receive his own spinoff, he’s unlikely to die anytime soon. In fact, the Penguin may be an even bigger threat for the Dark Knight in Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II in 2026. Sacrifices will probably need to be made, but after his debut in The Batman and his own starring role in HBO’s The Penguin spinoff series, Oswald Cobblepot’s story in Matt Reeves’ DC universe is just beginning.
